Consider planning a classroom activity that involves your students in taking video and/or creating effective photos. Think about...
How might you help students understand a few good photography tips to improve their photos?
How might you help students take effective photos to document their learning journey?
In what ways could the use of photography enhance your lesson and help students demonstrate your curriculum standards?
Classroom Example to Explore
Find examples of modern advertising on YouTube or Google.
Examine and evaluate how the images and video camera shots are framed in each clip.
Have your class compare and contrast the composition and framing in the ads.
Ask them to comment on what emotions and/or sense of desire and excitement for the product the camera framing and composition creates in them.
Pick an object in the classroom and ask the students to use their cameras to photograph it using the three fundamental shots: WS, MS, and CU.
Encourage the students to experiment with composition and framing as they attempt to make the object new, exciting, and desirable to the class.
Hold a critique session for everyone to provide feedback on the images and video.
Find an example of a how-to video on YouTube. This clip from Binging with Babish is a great example of a video that demonstrates how to prepare a grilled cheese sandwich.
Have the class watch the video.
Ask them to use their phone cameras to create a similar clip about making a sandwich.
Emphasize to the students that they are to use WS, MS, and CU shots to clearly document and demonstrate the sandwich construction so that viewers can reproduce the results.
Watch and critique the videos while sharing the sandwiches.
